Getting started

You want to get involved? - that's an excellent decision :-)

What do you want to do first?

I want to connect a device to the existing TTN Reading gateways

If you already have a LoraWAN device then you can set it up to connect to the TTN Reading gateways. Instructions can be found on the Networks? page.

If you want to go further and send packets through to The Things Network API then their wiki page(external link) is a good starting point.
We have a simple working example on our Projects page. You are welcome to use the source code, and Mark Stanley (hello) will be happy to help you get your device up and running.
Note, you will need to reserve a Device ID. Currently we have 255 addresses reserved in the range 02:01:1e:xx - we can get more as required. See who has got what devices set up on our Devices page.

Remember to use the forums and share your work - we can all learn from each other.

I want to build a device

There is plenty of guidance on The Things Network nodes wiki page(external link).
We have our own worked examples on our Projects page.
If you want to buy a ready made device to play with then the three that have been recommended (and not too expensive) are:

Help can always be found on The Things Network forums, or our own.

I want to build a gateway to extend TTN Reading's range

Awesome. You'll find this tutorial(external link) very helpful. PLEASE let us know how you get on.

Shopping list:
The Multitech gateway card is MTAC-LORA-868. When I bought mine Future Electronics were cheapest, but now I see DigiKey is selling them for $170 http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MTAC-LORA-868/881-1243-ND/5322991(external link)
and I saw them slightly cheaper at WDL Systems $168: http://www.wdlsystems.com/Communications/MultiTech/Multi-Tech-MultiConnect-mCard-868MHz-LoRa-Accessory-Card-Antenna-sold-Separately-EMEA.html(external link)

Other parts
According to the tutorial you need a USB to mini PCIe converter, something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VS2-Mini-PCI-E-Wireless-to-USB-Adapter-Card-With-SIM-Card-Slot-Test-WWAN-Module/251895832201?_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D34494%26meid%3D85172d31695b4c9da34545729a4d37c3%26pid%3D100012%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D400714168619(external link)

...and a Pi.

I want to buy a gateway to extend TTN Reading's range

Also awesome, thank you! The folk at The Things Network have a good gateway overview(external link) on their wiki.
Please also have a look at our Network page - it will show you what kit we are using in Reading.

I've got a brilliant idea and I'd like some help making it happen

Fantastic - please use the Use Cases(external link) forum and/or the G+ community site(external link) to get a team together.
Please also update the Projects page to let us know how it's going.

I want to help someone else make their brilliant idea happen

Great, you can post an offer of help on the G+ community site(external link) or make a direct offer on any of the Use Cases(external link) that take your fancy.
